Thanet Passport Update - 16

Dear Colleagues

Welcome to the final Passport Update of the strangest year ever! Whether we will ever return to a full calendar of inter-school sport in the future is anyone's guess, but let's try and be optimistic that we will.

SPORTS PREMIUM

So to start on a positive note, in case you were unaware, on 5th July the Government announced that the Primary PE and Sports Premium funding will continue for the 1920/21 academic year and that any unused funding from this academic year can be carried forward. The guidance states;-

"The Premium is designed to help children get an active start in life, supporting primary schools to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision so that pupils experience the benefits of regular exercise - from becoming healthier both mentally and physically to improved behaviour and better academic achievement. The funding is a ring-fenced grant for English primary schools to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity. Allocations to schools are determined by a formula based on pupil numbers. The average one form entry primary school will receive roughly £18,000 per year."

Further information and support can be found on the AfPE website or by clicking on the following link:-

PASSPORT COMMITTEE

The Passport Committee held a productive meeting via Zoom last week.

Firstly we were sad that Vinnie Jones from St Joseph's tendered his resignation from the Committee, as he is off to train as a secondary school PE teacher. Nevertheless, we would like to wish him every success in the future and thank him for his support, not to mention his ceaseless enthusiasm. Jade Bailey from Garlinge Primary School was nominated as a replacement and this was accepted. However, that still leaves us with one vacancy on the Committee. If anyone is interested in joining us or would like further information as to what is involved then please let me know. The current Passport Committee members are:-

Gary Rees (Chair & Administrator), Scott Tift (Holy Trinity Ramsgate, Vice Chair), Tony Bailey (St Saviour's), Steve Holmes (Priory Infants), Katie Delderfield (Palm Bay), Lisa Sparkes, Jack Hearn & Jade Bailey (all Garlinge), Stephanie Selsby (SGO)

The Committee decided that because all of our events since March have been cancelled, it would be wrong to implement the planned increase in the Passport Affiliation Fee as previously announced. Therefore the annual fees will remain the same for 2020/21, i.e. £200 for Infants and Small Schools and £600 for Juniors and through Primaries. Please remember that membership of Passport counts as eligible expenditure from your Sports Premium and can be recorded in your website statement as such.

PASSPORT CALENDAR

The Committee also spent a great deal of time trying to formulate what next year's calendar will look like. I am grateful for everyone's valuable input and after much discussion the following was decided:-

  • All of our usual hosting venues, such as Upton and The Ursuline, will be unavailable until further notice. Therefore in Terms 1 and 2 we will be organising a good few virtual events. Some events due to be held later in the year have been brought forward and others can hopefully be moved to the Spring and Summer when things may be clearer (let's be positive and hope that they will!). The virtual events can be carried out in your own school setting and the results submitted electronically. Trophies, medals and certificates will still be provided for all entrants, delivered by myself and Stephanie. A list of these events is attached, hopefully with others to be added. Further entry details and event specifications will be provided much nearer the time, but hopefully by letting you know the sports involved now this will allow you to plan your PE lessons and any sports clubs accordingly.
  • Some of the festivals in terms 3-6 will probably have to be cancelled to make room for certain competitions that, the easing of restrictions permitting, we will aim to move to later in the year. This list (at the moment) includes Football (DW cup, Les Riggs Cup, John Curran Cup & Super Saturday); Basketball; Y3/4 Sportshall Athletics; Netball (Passport Cup); Inclusive 5-a-side; CHS Rugby; Y2 Dodgeball & Handball.
  • In order to help us get a picture of what is happening across the District and to help us plan for the future, it would be really useful if every school could fill in and return the attached data capture form. It only takes 5-10 minutes I promise!
