Thanet Passport Update - 2

Dear Colleagues

Y1/2 MULTISPORT FESTIVAL

This event for our Infants in Years 1 and 2 will take place at Ramsgate Leisure Centre on Thursday 5th October, 4.15-5.30pm. Due to limited space the venue can only host 8 schools and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please send your entries to Steve Holmes (NOT ME!) at Priory Infant School. sholmes@priory.kent.sch.uk . Entries close at midnight on Friday 29th September 2023.

At the event the children will participate in 3 different games (Dodgeball, Handball and Skittles) which will be ideal preparation for other events later in the year. Further details and rules of the three games will be outlined upon successful entry. Teams must be of mixed gender in squads of up to 10 children, with 8 permitted to play in a game at any one time. The event will focus on the key Sports Values of Honesty, Teamwork, Respect, Self-Belief, Passion and Determination.

Y5/6 BASKETBALL TASTER

Details are attached for this event, which is the first of several 'taster' sessions we are running this year in order to familiarise staff and players with the rules and format of various sports well before the tournaments take place, thereby increasing enthusiasm, skill levels and numbers of participants. The Basketball taster will take place at The Ursuline on Friday 6th October, 4-5.30pm. If you wish to take part then please email me, garybcrees@gmail.com . Closing date for entries is midnight on Friday 29th September 2023.

Y3-6 CROSS COUNTRY

A quick reminder about getting your entries in for the first of our Cross Country events at Quex Park on Saturday 7th October. Details were sent out to all eligible schools 2 weeks ago and entry forms can still be found on the Passport website, www.thanetpassport.org.uk
The cost per runner has increased slightly to £4.00 to cover the increased costs of staging this event. The administration arrangements will be the same as the last time this event was held, so there will be no need for pinned-on numbers or a spreadsheet.

PLEASE REMEMBER that entry forms should now be sent to the organiser. Steve King - steve@eastkentcoaching.com no later than midday on Friday 29th September 2023, with payment either by cheque or BACS to arrive by Monday 2nd October 2023.

Please do not send entry forms or payment to me!

Schools that fail to meet the entry and payment deadlines will not be able to take part.

Y1/2 FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

Attached are all the details you need for this event which will take place at Margate FC on Wednesday 11th October 2023, 3.45-5.30pm. The event will be supported by students from Broadstairs College who will run a warm-up session and be available to officiate. Entries should be sent to me, garybcrees@gmail.com , with a closing date of Wednesday 4th October 2023.

PE STAFF NETWORKING MEETING

Our first Networking Meeting of the year for PE staff is due to take place at 1pm on Friday 13th October 2023. In the past PE teachers and sports coaches have always found these networking meetings to be informative and hugely supportive, whether they be 'old-stagers' or entirely new to the role. The meeting will be held at North Foreland Golf Club and we have a full agenda planned, including information from our SGO about our Olympics Celebration Week; ideas for spending your PE and Sports Premium; plus an exploration of what Ofsted are looking for when they come a-knocking.  We are also hoping to be able to practise our skills on the putting green! Refreshments will be provided. Don't forget that the cost of cover for you to attend counts as eligible expenditure from your PE & Sports Premium budget.

Please let me know if you will be attending by emailing me, garybcrees@gmail.com , no later than Wednesday 11th October 2023. There is no limit on numbers and more than one member of staff per school can attend.

PASSPORT CODE OF CONDUCT

Sadly I have been informed of a couple of instances recently of school staff being verbally abused by parents whilst officiating at football matches. This is, of course, totally unacceptable and mercifully rare at most Passport events. I know that school staff always try to promote fair play, sportsmanship and respect for opponents and officials, but sometimes people need reminding that sport is there to be enjoyed by all. I would hope that abuse of match officials would always be challenged by school staff, and to help you in this endeavour Thanet Passport drew up a Code of Conduct many years ago for coaches, officials, players and spectators. This can be found on our website, but I have attached a copy to this Update. Please feel free to share it!

PRE-ENTRY PROTOCOL

Finally, please remember that by entering a Thanet Passport event you are making a commitment. Subsequent withdrawal can cause many problems, especially if done with little notice, as fixtures will already have been sent out and medals ordered, plus there might be schools on a waiting list if the event is over-subscribed. Obviously last minute illness amongst staff or children cannot be foreseen, especially these days, although even then it doesn't hurt to think about a back-up plan if this were to happen. In order to help schools with this issue, Thanet  Passport has also drawn up a Pre-Entry Protocol document and a useful Checklist of things to do once you have entered. I have attached copies for your convenience, which can also be found under the Documents section on our website.

Best Wishes
